The Brewster toile began as an original watercolor — painted by hand, one landmark at a time, then drawn into a repeating toile the way toiles have been made for two hundred years. Nothing in it is stock art. If you know Brewster, you will recognize what is in it: the flats at low tide and the old sea captains’ houses.
Printed to order in our own shop in Rockland, Massachusetts, on 100% premium cotton satin.
The cloth
- 100% premium cotton, smooth satin weave. A soft hand with a light sheen that holds fine linework — which matters, because this pattern is nearly all fine linework.
- 54″ printed width. The goods are 56″ wide; there is an unprinted selvedge on both sides that you trim off.
- Background is white, and the blue is the same in every town. The artwork is hand-painted watercolor, but the blue itself is standardized across the collection — so yardage from one town and wallpaper from another read as one thing.
- Three-yard minimum, then by the yard up to ten. Yardage is printed continuous, not in separate cuts.
What it is good for
Curtains, roman shades, cushions and pillow fronts, upholstered headboards, table linen, quilting, tote bags, and lining the inside of a cupboard where only you will see it. At 54″ wide, one yard covers a generous pair of cushion fronts; three yards will make a pair of unlined curtains for a standard window.
Care
- Wash on a gentle cycle with a non-chlorine detergent.
- Tumble dry on low heat, or air dry for the best result.
- No bleach — it will pull the color.
- Press on the reverse while slightly damp.
- Cotton satin will relax a little on its first wash. If you are making something fitted, wash the yardage before you cut it.
Before you order
- Made to order. Your yardage is printed for you when you order, and ships within one to two weeks.
- Measure twice. Because it is printed to order we cannot take it back if you change your mind — but if it arrives damaged, misprinted or not what you ordered, we replace it. Tell us within 14 days.
- Matching wallpaper. Every town in this collection is also made as wallpaper, in the same hand-painted toile, if you want the room to carry the pattern all the way round.
